What I like most about Skydive Orange:  The people at Orange are awesome.  The staff and fun jumpers strike the perfect balance: first class instruction with safety being paramount and then when the sun goes down its party central!

Advice for other student Skydivers:  Tunnel time is well worth the money and drive just to increase chances of cracking straight through your first few jumps.

Advice I wish I'd had:  Nothing really, part and parcel of the good instruction means I felt really well informed from first getting in touch right through my training.

What I don't like about Skydive Orange:  Er, its too far from my apartment...

Suggestions:  Just keep up the good work guys.

What I like the most about Skydive Orange: The People- they're the best! Super friendly, funny and most importantly, very professional and skilled skydivers.
Advice for other student skydivers: Get in the harness by the appropriate time and don't piss Steve off! And most importantly, have fun!
Advice you wish you had been given: Practice packing early
What I don't like about Skydive Orange I have TMobile, so there is absolutely NO cell phone reception
Suggestions for Skydive Orange: Put up a TMobile tower!
And anything else you think appropriate. Thanks to everyone for all their help and advice!

What I like most about Skydive Orange:
Skydive Orange has a great sense of Community. This is evident at your first visit, when you come for your first AFF jump.  The professional staff gives you the feeling of being personally attached to this particular drop zone. The instructors, coaches, licensed jumpers and even other students coming to Skydive Orange are part of a family.  You are welcomed and given the undivided attention of all in this unique group. The number of people working with students made my progress safe, quick and easy. Another surprising aspect of  jumping with Skydive Orange is that, although I was jumping with instructors and coaches who have made hundreds or thousands of jumps, I always felt that jumping with me was not another “routine” matter but that they really enjoyed working with me. The same regarding the number of students: although there are many people learning how to skydive, I always felt as if I was the only student.

Advice for other student skydivers:
Of course, the first order of business is safety.  Whether a one-time "bucket list" jumper, or someone like me who fell in love with skydiving and decided to seek a license, Skydive Orange trains you by building a routine that will ensure each and every jump is as safe as can be.  Do not worry about weather. Although I had to wait on the ground some days because of the wind, clouds or cold temperatures, there were always plenty of things you can do on the ground: training for each "category" or step toward your license (e.g., learning and practicing canopy packing). If the weather is wonderful you can just go and enjoy jumping instead of trying to get your ground part of the training. Also, do not worry if you need to repeat any jumps because you did not accomplish the goals of a single jump. Each time I had to get another jump I was always able to get it, and I enjoyed each and every one. You will be pleasantly surprised how hard your instructors are willing to work with you to help you improve your skills.

Advice you wish you had been given:
I wonder if I would have gone for my first jump if I had known that skydiving is so much fun and that this sport is really addictive. All my friends complain that all I want to talk about is skydiving.  The advice I would give to busy people: even if it is hard for you to take a day off on regular basis, as was my case, you can still go through AFF program. The training is individualized so you learn at your own pace. Additional days of jumping, like national holidays, really helped me to get my A-license faster.

What I don't like about Skydive Orange:
It is not open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Suggestions for Skydive Orange:
Keep providing great, personalized service to your students

What I like most about Skydive Orange:  The instructors and coaches are awesome! They are incredibly professional, care about your safety and won’t let you fail.  They strictly follow USPA and FAA guidelines and regulations.  The student equipment is the best stuff on the market.  I like how the skydiving program helps reinforce and teach the values of situational awareness, confidence, discipline, attention to detail, risk management and priorities. If any of us apply a few of these lessons to normal life we all would be a little better for it. Overall the people at Orange are great and I am pretty certain that you wouldn’t get as good an experience anywhere else.

Advice for other student skydivers: It’s going to take awhile to your get license and that’s not a bad thing. There is a lot of learning and information that needs to be picked up on the ground. Take the opportunity go to a wind tunnel with a coach, the experience is very valuable.  It takes awhile to learn how pack so anticipate that and practice as often as you can.  Take the time in the practice harness seriously and ask plenty of questions.  I think this one of the best routines they have at Orange.  Have fun and don’t forget to smile!

Advice you wish had been given:  Skydiving is fun and addictive so keep your priorities straight!!

Suggestions for Skydive Orange: Nothing I can think of.

What I like the most about Skydive Orange:  Low death rate. :) Every single person is willing to answer any question you have about anything. The chilled-out yet efficient process of ground training, jumping, and de-briefing leads to a perfect experience every time! The Super Otter is always a pleasure to jump out of. The coaches and instructors are very knowledgeable and professional.

Advice for other student skydivers:  Make sure you have plenty of open days to commit to the student program because the winds will pick up and the clouds will roll in and you will not be jumping every day you plan to. Although it’s nice to take the packing class early in the program, I would have rather waited until I was almost licensed so packing was still fresh in my mind when it was more necessary to pack my own chute. Don’t let the cold intimidate you…-10 degrees at altitude with adrenaline pumping through you will feel like a warm Spring day.

Advice you wish you had been given:  The time commitment can be substantial, especially if you live over 2 hours away!

 You will become addicted.

Although Skydive Orange is a solid drive from Hagerstown, it is undoubtedly worth every minute and I will gladly continue making the trip to my home drop zone. Thanks to everyone who taught me along the way and to everyone who will continue teaching me!

At first I went to Skydive Orange just to do the AFF course, but after the first day there I realized that the staff, instructors, other students and other fun jumpers made it more than just a dropzone, but also a social place to hang out and spend your weekends.

What I like the most about Skydive Orange: The people and the friendly atmosphere and hanging out at the dropzone after hours.

Advice for other student skydivers: Stay on top of your quizzes, get your packing done early, take any extra teaching courses like canopy courses if you have the chance. Don't be afraid to ask ANY questions no matter how stupid you may think it is. Stay around and get to know everybody and RELAX.

Advice you wish you had been given: None that I can think of, Orange's AFF is as thorough as it gets.

What I don't like about Skydive Orange: The fickle weather god.

Suggestions for Skydive Orange: Maybe offer some kind of basic canopy course for accuracy etc to progressing AFF students.

What I like the most about Skydive Orange: The instructors and coaches, and everyone at Orange, are just a bunch of rockstars! In the sky and on the ground, they are serious about having fun, but more importantly they are serious about being safe. I love riding the Otter to altitude and the mix of people on the plane--first time tandems, experienced jumpers with thousands of jumps, and AFF students dreaming of being those experienced jumpers one day :)

Advice for other student skydivers: Learning how to skydive is like learning a language--there is ALWAYS more you can learn! Windy, cloudy days are great for practicing packing and swapping stories with fellow students and jumpers! Fall asleep with your SIM--better to dream about skydiving than work! Don't get behind on your quizzes, and learn how to pack as soon as you can (unlike I did!), it's actually fun!

Advice you wish you had been given: Skydiving will take over your life and the worst thing about skydiving is that it's the only thing you can think about once you start!

What I like most about Skydive Orange: Everything! But mostly....the friendly, experienced and safety conscious staff. The easy going yet energetic atmosphere. The fast and comfortable plane and the variety of great gear available to students. I was also very impressed that Orange uses the USPA SIM and follows the ISP very meticulously.

Advice for other students: Make a tunnel trip! Get as much video as much as you can afford. Stick around for weather holds and after jumping hours as you'll undoubtedly learn something and have a blast doing it. Always ask lots of questions and listen to your instructors carefully. Jump with confidence, but not with ignorance. Know your gear, learn to pack early, visualize every jump, relax and have fun! And don't forget the beer...

Advice I wish I'd been given: The student program is a journey and you'll get out of it what you put into it. Make the commitment and invest in the gear early. Jump as much as possible, no excuses.

Suggestions for Skydive Orange: Keep up the awesome work!

What I like most about Skydive Orange: The people are absolutely amazing. The instructors and staff are extremely friendly and are always willing to lend a hand. They are very professional and want to help out in any way they can and they make safety and fun top priorities. I love how efficient the AFF program is, I love the gear, I love the hangar, I love hanging out after hours, and I love the Twin Otter.
Advice for other student skydivers: Make sure you stay after jumping hours to meet new people and to relax and enjoy the company. The folks at Orange are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Also, stay on top of your quizzes and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Learn to pack efficiently, come out to the drop zone regardless of the weather forecast, ask as many questions as possible and, most of all, learn to relax and just have fun!

What I like most about Skydive Orange: The friendly atmosphere and willingness from everyone to help me learn.

Advice for other students
  • Don't wait to take your packing class!
  • Stay the whole weekend, even if you aren't able to get a jump in one day, you never know what will happen the next. Plus, you get the fun of after-hour festivities.
  • Listen to your instructors! They know what they are talking about!
  • Relax and have fun!

Advice I wish I'd been given: Nothing I can think of, I think I was given all the advice I needed.

What I don't like about Skydive Orange: That I can't be there 7 days a week!

Suggestions for Skydive Orange: Again, nothing I can think of. Skydive Orange does a great job of preparing their students and I feel 100% confident in my training.

Thank's to everyone at Skydive Orange, I can't wait to keep jumping and learning from all of you!

What I like most about Skydive Orange: Here’s my top 3:

  1. How quickly I felt like a part of the family down there, despite making the ‘I want to be a skydiver’ decision on my own.
  2. Steve’s nod of acceptance after you’ve just made a killer skydive and avoided killing a cow in the landing field
  3. Despite the parties and the laughing and joking, safety is priority number 1 for everyone.

Advice for other students: Pre-pay if you can. I didn’t and now wish I had 12 free skydives to look forward to! Don’t bail on a weather hold – I had plenty of days waiting 7 hours having a blast with the crew in the hangar. Sometimes you get to jump on the last load once the wind has died down.  Other times you get to learn a ton from hanging out all day and asking stupid questions.

Advice you wish you’d been given: Make sure to get a video or two in the early days of learning. The usual feedback from your instructors plus the video is invaluable.

What I like most about skydive orange:
-Easily it's the atmosphere. Everyone who's there is looking to have a great time skydiving and doing so safely, and to a person they all bring a super friendly and exceptionally helpful attitude. It's a fun place to hang out and to skydive.

-Second to that is the Super Otter at Orange. It carries a lot of jumpers and gets to altitude quickly, which means more turns in a day and more opportunity to jump.

Advice for other student skydivers:
-Ask lots of questions. Everyone there knows you're new to the sport and are happy to help. It won't take you long to identify the jumpers with tons of experience, and those are the fellow jumpers who's answers are sure to be helpful. In fact, what you'll find (especially after receiving your license) is the jumpers at this DZ with a lot of experience tend to keep an eye on you from afar, and won't hesitate to approach you and make suggestions or provide assistance.

-I'll also second a few of the other comments on here from fellow students I went through AFF with this summer: stay on top of your yellow card, especially your quizzes; every now and then spend a few nights at the DZ. On good weather days you can spend most of the day jumping, packing or studying, so having some time in the evening to kick back and get to know some of the jumpers you've been jumping with on a personal level is a lot of fun; and finally, don't let the weather forecast rule your decisions to head to Orange and skydive. Some of the best times in that hangar to learn and get to know people are while an afternoon thundershower is rolling through and everyone's waiting for it to clear.

-take the harness time in the morning very seriously. When you need your emergency procedures, you'll want them to be instinctive, and the only way to do this is by practice in the harness and visualization exercises. Even after you obtain your license, it's a good idea to start your days reviewing these procedures.

-If you can get some video of your jumps, do so. It's the second best training tool behind actually jumping.

-As you're going through the course, be sure to take note of the great team at Orange packing for you. Get to know them some, and make sure you take good care of them. They work hard and do a great job for all the student, instructor, tandem and camera jumpers at Orange.

-Relax and have fun!
