Am I the only one bothered by that word? It is a poor
choice of a word to describe a critical component of modern technology for two
reasons:
The internet is high speed technology. Really. Even when it's slow, it
is still way faster than any method of retrieving information was in the pre
computer, pre internet age. I want information and I WANT IT NOW type of
a thing. Not one single person who uses it would be caught dead saying that
they were "browsing" for anything else in life, nor did they like to
admit that the word browse was in their vocabulary until the advent of the
internet browser. You have all the time in the world when you are just
browsing
around for something. You have time between flights at an airport, so you are
just hanging around the bookshop browsing with no real intention of buying
anything for example.
But "browser" sounds like a dog. Not just any dog, an older brown and white dog
with slightly longer than average hair who retrieves the slippers and brings
in the paper for it's owner, and sits obediently at the owner's feet (when he
is not sitting back in his recliner) while he (the owner) watches TV smoking
his pipe. His owner is a Ward Clever type of fellow, who lives in a nicely
kept big house in an old respectable housing development. They are retired
folks. Folks who have lots of money and time on their hands. They browse
around the local bookstore a lot. But they don't even OWN a computer. They
still read books. They have time to Browse.
