Celebrities Who Skydive

Sunday, December 27, 2020

Because skydiving isn’t in the mainstream, you may be unaware of just how many celebrities in the world love skydiving! Some of the biggest names in entertainment are licensed jumpers or at the very least have made one tandem skydive. Let’s begin with the A-listers who can’t get enough of our sport!

CELEBRITY SKYDIVERS

Tom Cruise

Is Tom Cruise even real or is he some crazy robot? This guy seems to do everything from flying helicopters to actively skydiving. Cruise is well-known to do his own stunts which included one of the most famous skydiving scenes in Hollywood history. In Mission Impossible: Fallout, Cruise made over 100 training skydives in preparation for the night HALO jumps being done over Dubai. Below is a behind the scenes look at all that went into the making of the iconic scene:

Tom Cruise and James Corden

During the promotion of Mission Impossible: Fallout Cruise famously took James Corden skydiving with our friends at Skydive Perris in California for a tandem skydive. This skydiving sequence is arguably one of the funniest skydives ever shot. Enjoy the hilarity!

David Blaine

If you missed the high-altitude balloon stunt, Ascension with David Blaine, you may want to check it out here. His YouTube video has generated over 22 million views! To us, what was more impressive was the preparation for the stunt. Blaine made over 500 skydives to gain the license needed for him to make Ascension a reality. Also of interest is the camera flyer featured in this video happens to be the same one used with Tom Cruise for both the Mission Impossible jump and Corden jump – the legendary Craig O’Brien.

Will Smith

Perhaps one of the most famous celebrity skydivers is Will Smith. Smith has made multiple tandem jumps and even took his entire family for a tandem jump at Skydive Dubai. You can get a sense of Will Smith’s passion for jumping when he recounted his experience in front of a live audience:

In this video, Will Smith talks to Ellen about taking his wife Jada Pinkett Smith skydiving for his 50th birthday (how is Will Smith over 50?).

Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze died in 2009 but his spirit lives on especially in the skydiving community. Few other people in the world have done more for the sport of skydiving than Patrick Swayze and the movie Point Break. While not all the skydiving scenes in Point Break were real (there’s a very famous multi-minute jump that’s not exactly accurate), Patrick was a legit skydiver. During the shooting of the movie, Patrick would routinely go skydiving during his spare time which would anger the producers for fear that if something happened to him the entire movie could be put in jeopardy. Despite their concerns, Swayze did a lot of jumps anyway. The underground success of Point Break and its amazing skydiving scenes inspired tens of thousands of people to take up the sport. Some of the sports highest achievers were inspired by Point Break.

Travis Pastrana

Travis Pastrana is the ultimate stunt junkie and it should come as no surprise that Pastrana has done his fair share of skydiving. Below is Pastrana’s jump into Nitro City in Panama. Not a bad gig if you can get it!

Lewis Hamilton

If you don’t follow F1 racing then you may not be familiar with one of the most famous athletes on the planet outside of the US – Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton is one of the most exciting and successful race car drivers in F1 history (he just tied Michael Schumacher’s record for most World Drivers Championships. Schumacher used to be an active skydiver, himself). Of skydiving Lewis shared this on Instagram:

This is my fav thing to do currently. The reason I skydive is I love that there are really no limits in free fall. It’s incredible to just let your mind free, remove all doubt and any insecurities you may be feeling in life and jump. I think in life many of us don’t take that leap because of fear, something of which holds us back from greatness. You can do anything you put your mind to. I was nervous the first time but this has helped me to let go of many things and go for the things I love. Don’t let fear dictate your life. You can do anything you put your mind to I truly believe that ??

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is another star that joined the ranks of famous skydivers when she made her tandem skydive a few years ago. Here’s a video of her experience:

Thomas Rhett

If you love country music then you’re fully aware that Thomas Rhett went skydiving! He loved the experience so much that it got heavy play in his awesome music video for his song “Vacation.” As a sidenote, Thomas didn’t throw up after his jump (at least we hope not…)

Colbie Caillat

Travis Rhett isn’t the only celebrity who has featured skydiving in a music video. Caillat jumped with our friends at Skydive Newport in Rhode Island and featured the entire event in her music video for the song Live It Up. It’s a catchy tune with a great video:

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark)

Remember Arya Stark of Game of Thrones (she was our favorite character!). Maisie made a skydive for charity in England and absolutely loved her experience. https://youtu.be/nT2u3pZ0rbw

We hope you’ve enjoyed the skydiving version of People Magazine! We had a great time putting this piece together of some of our favorite stars who skydive. Other stars who jump but we couldn’t source videos for are Tiger Woods (he got his A-license many years ago) and actor Sean Penn.
